This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, the New Beetle is no longer available in GLX trim. There's an improved TDI engine and restyled 16- and 17-inch wheels. Turbo S models get uniquely styled 17-inch wheels as a late-year addition. New safety features include head curtain airbags and upgraded head restraints. The Monsoon audio system is now standard on the GLS and new GDL headlights are optional. Later in the model year a fixed rear spoiler will replace the power-operated unit and a CD player with MP3 capability will be added. Convertibles get new exterior colors and color combinations. All Beetles get a new fuel cap warning light this year. TDI models can be equipped with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), which is a six-speed manual transmission with electronic control of the clutch and gearshifting. It can be operated in full automatic mode, like a traditional automatic, or shifted manually like a Tiptronic.

Pros:
  • Cute yet classic styling, range of engine choices, long list of standard features, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Tight rear-seat accommodations, limited cargo room, high price of Turbo S model.

I bought this car to hand it over to a college student after the first year. I thought it would be fun but not for a middle aged professional engineer. I am delighted to announce the performance and overall product is outstanding.

As soon as I sat in that car it felt like home. The comfort in the drivers seat was perfect , I could see everywhere ,I felt as though I had perfect control of the car , everything was so handy for me that I couldnt believe it. Handles great, pick up is there when you need it, and Ive only got the 4 cylinder automatic. To make a long story short, for me , this car has everything.

VW replaced my 2003 Beatle because of PA state Lemon Law (it was in the shop 13 times in the first year!). The 2004 they replaced it with is NO better. If you want to spend time in the shop and drive a rental car....buy the New Beatle Convertible. This girl is bugged out!!

I just got my cyber green beetle about a month ago and it is the best car ever! This car is so smooth to ride in and has so many great features. It truly is like a luxury vehicle. I got the cream cloth interior but I would get leather if I could afford it. Beautiful car, this is my first car but I have driven many others especially SUVs. Nothing compares to a VOLKSWAGEN!

  • This bug is a lemon in disguise - 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle

Just 19 months old, in the shop 5 times, each time 2-5 days. Recalled for top, still broken, mildew smells, radio volume too high. Mechanically sound, but asthetically bogus. Dealership still has followed through and now doesnt return calls. Arghhh

  • Love/Hate 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS - 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle

I ignored all of those typical issues with wiring, bulbs out, handles coming off seat, chronic top opening problem because I loved the fit and finish and the drive, but then last summer my transmission started to go. A new transmission on a car with 75,000 miles on it is 6,000 plus installation? You have got to be kidding me! So I continue to drive it jerking all around until I think up what to do next. This was supposed to be handed down to my 13 year old.
